This sort of reminds me of that Sunny Came Home song by Shawn Colvin. We have the door starting vibrant and living and then being painted over, representing the speaker being blackened over by "him". As the speaker recovers a sense of themselves, they seek to be clean of his influence. I like the paints and the image. I found myself coming back to this poem over the last few days. The image has stuck in my mind.
