I see two kinds of hipsters, and these two kinds have subgroups. The hipsters you talk about here, that's one kind. Then, there are the general hipsters; anyone that's attractive and has more than, say, five friends is very hip compared to me.
None of these modern day hipsters are very hip, or cool for that matter. But there are so damn many of them. And most of them have at least some money to begin with. So they can afford material and get support for their film projects and so on. Or, they can just dress and talk like the rich ones, and put their stuff online, and nobody can tell the famous ones from the wannabes, because they're doing the exact same thing.
Though some of the famous ones accidently produce some good stuff from time to time. The not-so-famous ones just have all the smart girls in your town following them around like spellbound rats. Then all you have is the envious, obsessive girls that got shunned by the hip groups for burning out on their recreational drugs.
