One of them was, in the language of the locals ''a terrible man for the drink'', not at all uncommon. There was a very steep hill where I was, but this did not prevent him from using the traditional greeting when driving -- to take both hands off the wheel.
Someone thoughtfully gave him a job as ''pier-master'' although only a few boats came, little things. One would see him tottering backwards and seawards, rather in the way a clown can make as if at any moment he would fall. Then one day he did, and that, sadly, was that.....so think twice before reaching for the electric sauce.....
