There wasn't much room in that day’s soggy weather.
Each of her steps had to be monitored, puddles analyzed,
grimy newspaper and garbage given a wide birth.
The curb was a row of steadfast enemy soldiers.
She once loved to dance when it rained,
to grab at each drop like a potential swing partner
and hurl mud chunks at passing squirrels.
She still likes these things
but her son likes them better, and she must have known
that grownups stand guard when it rains.
Whenever she can find a babysitter
we go bowling, and walk around laughing at everyone.
We talk of times spent, not spent up, but, well, anyway…
Perhaps I should stop…I’m not so old you know…
