I've just finished teaching Lord of the Flies to my year 11 class, and despite their tendency toward savagery on occasion, I was actually left with some hope for the future of civilisation. I think the key is, you need to want to be civilised, to consider others and to practice empathy at all times. If you set out determined that the world sucks and everyone's out to get what they can so why shouldn't you, then of course things are going to turn savage.
