Canada is indeed quite civilized. But we have had incidents such as when the cops repeatedly tasered a Polish guy at the Vancouver airport until he died.

I have a friend that was beaten so bad in the police lockup that his kidney's were flipped around. They used a phone book and a billy club on him while his hands were cuffed above and behind his head through the bars of the cell. 3 cops took turns at him. He had done nothing wrong other than he was a known tough guy and stood up for his rights.
