What I've learnt about poetry is more on the writing side. When reading poetry I love I'm too in the moment. When I first started reading it, I remember being knocked over by what was possible with words (for me it was Olds Sex Without Love the last seven lines especially). I never read that type of work and think I can do that. There are moments though where it all comes together and I love that. It happens rarely when I'm writing.
The most important thing in writing is tough I've spent years on imagery, line breaks, and tons of other things. I guess it would be that everything matters.
I like Ruth's (paraphrasing): listen to critique and know when not to listen. That's another important thing.

The secret of poetry is cruelty.--Jon Anderson
