the heart of poetry

what is it at the heart of poetry that people like or enjoy, what makes us want to read or write poetry. okay, i know it's far reaching question that probably can't be answered. i know of the judge who said; i don't know what art is but i know what i like. but is there a wick or core that runs through poems which calls, or keeps us looking for that one extra special poem?

Read it: For me, poetry is like a string of one night stands. It lacks the commitment of the novel. I like getting to that line that makes me say yes that's true and have it knock the crap out of me. Purely selfish reasons. Like this strophe from Sandra Beasley's Small Kingdom I just read:

I don’t know how to keep you
without killing you a little – the way
my mother pares down the rosemary
each year to keep its flavor bright.
The way we must make all our loves smaller
before they can enter our kingdom.

It's those moments that keep me reading.

Write it: I write for the moment when the answer I need jumps into my head. Writing always feels like solving puzzles. I like getting answers.

A good poem gives you just as much as a novel, but it's much more exciting

I don't like getting answers so much as I like finding new questions. Poetry lets you think in all sorts of new directions.

Writing about little things can lead to big thoughts... not that Godzilla is all that little

And yes, finding a way to allow someone else to understand your own rather odd world view is very satisfying.

i think, well i know that for me, when i write something, it's mine. no matter how shitty it has something of me in it. when i draw (or used to) it was never the same. then it was like having to use external tools etc, not tools that come from me like my language but physical tools. i know i need pen and paper or a substitute for them but that's it. of course i realise most art is done the same way. it's just that poetry give me expression, painting doesn't. i think when i look or try to look into the heart of poetry, i see myself. different facets of who i am or was. the evolution of me. and i see it in so many ways. i see it in the newb's first poem or the erudite poet's masterpiece. it give me the chance to be a kung fu master of words.; whether by reading or writing. it give me me
