Hi, Jill!

Welcome aboard!
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

Obviously I am new here, and I consider myself a novice poet, so I've been a little hesitant at leaping in with feedback. But, I am trying. I'm like AA...I don't think I am in a position to give advice, so my responses will be in the nature of 'Wow' and maybe even 'How do you do that?'

So, hope that is okay.

bye grannyjill
don't worry, everyone is in a position to feedback and even advice, the poet can use it or leave, and no harms done. if you like it to a wow, just try and say why. i remember you commenting on my "bought and still paying" poem and that was fine.
it's the same if something doesn't work for you, just try and say why.

it' isn't about being good or bad, it's about having some fun while trying to expand as a poet Smile i'm sure everyone would welcome what you have to say feedback wise.

Sitting idly at the keyboard contemplating my navel (it's a contortionist I am) I re-read this thread. Just wanted to say I love this line from AA's response....is there a poem there AA?

it feels like trying to touch up the Mona Lisa with a crayon.

Just a note on choosing the right forum to post in: it's not about how good or bad you think a poem is, it's about how much detail you want in the feedback you receive. If you're really serious about fine-tuning, even down to the last comma, then Serious Critique is your best bet. If you just want general impressions with a few moderate suggestions, choose Mild Critique. If you're just playing around, go for Poetry For Fun. Haiku and Senryu -- well, that's fairly self-explanatory Smile For anything a little out of the ordinary, mixed media or fusion work, go with Miscellaneous. Obviously, the Novice Forum is for people new to poetry or learning new styles/forms. Critique there will be gentle but helpful.

Anyone is welcome to post anywhere, and we definitely encourage people to try commenting in a variety of fora -- just bear in mind that if they've got it right, the people who've posted there will be after a particular level of critique and it's nice to try and match up results with expectations Smile

And for heaven's sake, if you feel overwhelmed or just can't be bothered reading/writing in the poetry fora, come and blow off some steam in The Sewer or The Pig's Arse. Just about anything goes there, so it's enter at your own risk, but it's a great form of poetry detox.

I'd just like to reiterate that we have a variety of different fora here, for different purposes. Although it might take a while to find the best fit style of comment for each forum, a good way to figure it out is to look at the posts already there and see how others are responding. This is not to say we encourage homogeneity in any way, nor that we want people to just repeat what's already been said. We revel in the fact that each member has a different background, style and set of knowledges. At the same time, we ask that everyone respect the original post in a poetry thread and try to provide feedback that will be most suitable, especially in the Novice Forum. I'm sure those of us who are more experienced remember what it was like to start out and in some cases be given a baptism of fire, but that sort of thing is readily available on other sites. What's less common -- and something we pride ourselves on here -- is a mentoring attitude, where beginners can have their mistakes explained to them, receive valuable suggestions for improvement and generally not come to feel that poetry is a craft they can indeed learn if they want to put the effort in, without being ridiculed or having their ignorance highlighted too harshly.
