Germany: nuclear power trendsetter?
#1

Quote:Europe's economic powerhouse, Germany, announced plans Monday to abandon nuclear energy over the next 11 years, outlining an ambitious strategy in the wake of Japan's Fukushima disaster to replace atomic power with renewable energy sources.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said she hopes the transformation to more solar, wind and hydroelectric power serves as a roadmap for other countries.

"We believe that we can show those countries who decide to abandon nuclear power - or not to start using it - how it is possible to achieve growth, creating jobs and economic prosperity while shifting the energy supply toward renewable energies," Merkel said.

Will Germany serve as an international trendsetter? Or will this only put Germany firmly in line for economic woes or some other dire consequence from which it will surely never recover, etc.?

As someone who thinks the use of nuclear power is shortsighted, I hope for the former.

I wish them the best in their endeavor. With any luck, maybe this may even help kickstart their economic growth
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

their economic growth is one of the best in the world, i found out today that;

[quote](RTTNews) - Germany's merchandise exports increased from last year in the first quarter, data released by statistical office Destatis showed Wednesday.

Total exports increased 18.8 percent year-on-year to EUR 260.8 billion in the first quarter. Shipments to countries outside the European Union (EU) advanced 22.3 percent, while exports to the EU countries moved up by 16.6 percent annually. Dispatches to Russia and China grew 42.6 percent and 31 percent, respectively during the quarter.

Imports increased 20.9 percent annually to EUR 220 billion in the first quarter.

Arrivals from the EU member countries climbed 18.8 percent, while imports from non-member states advanced 23.7 percent year-on-year. There was a 35.8 percent surge in imports from Russia, and a 14.8 percent growth in arrivals from the United States.[quarter]

at times germany and the rest of europe are on par with germany as the largest block country exporters. germany once again is becoming the powerhouse of europe. if anyone can achieve 30 to 40 percent renewable energy in the next 5 to ten years it will be germany. i see that other countries are partially following suit in cutting back on nuke power, though whether or not they'll return to the burning of fossil fuels is another matter. i think a child being born now may by the time he's a 30 year adult, see real changes in his environment. sadly population will probably make a mess of any strides forward renewable energy creates.
