Two Easter Poems
#1
1.

another year another week
staving off the spiritual
and intellectual lobotomy of religion,
Christ nagging at my anxiety
like a methadone craving.
I don’t know why I continue to fight.
maybe in case I end up outside
a hotel with a gun, waiting for
my own John Lennon to emerge.

I need new medication.
pills to make me content with
rattling around inside my own head,
like a widow watering her plants
and leaving food out for the birds
until death at last relieves her.

2.

Watching the tail end of Fern Cotton’s
chat show today, I saw Gareth Thomas
on the couch, probably still dining out
on his reputation as the one rugby player
who’s admitted he’s gay.

Something about him disgusts me.
How what he does with his genitals
has exceeded whatever talent he had.

This Good Friday I can’t help thinking
about all the queers who were burned
and tortured to death
throughout history so this upstart
can be paid to act like a gay Romeo.

I’d still fuck him though.

the 1st apart from the enjambment on L1 of the 2nd verse
feels pretty dark, does the 1st line need a comma after year?
a couple of good images. and i love the lennon reference

the 2nd i felt was almost a work of art, def publishable,
it has depth and feeling and also a smidgen of wit hehe.
i can't find anything to fault with it, which is rare Angry
thanks for the read

How does the enjambment on the second verse's first line affect the mood of the piece? I'll change that and put "pills" at the start of the following line in a mo anyway as looking back I don't like it.
I must say your comment surprises me. I thought you wouldn't think much of the second piece, and say at the most that it was a good observational poem. Thanks for your kind words BillySmile

oops it doesn't except for the fact it made me falter. i was trying to work out what i thought wasn't working for me and in doing so forgot about the poem as is often the case, (it's why i read a poem 4 or 5 times. )

i thought the 2nd had some good insights. specially the last line lmao.
