train spotting. why on earth would anyone stand on a train platform all day and take down numbers of poxy trains the've seen,

every time i come to the uk i see plane spotters at the edge of the airfield
as we land, it's that common they built a special viewing area

i think so, at least you can learn more than a planes time table on here,
and not all thats posted is crap.

i also think the interaction you get can be a good thing.
i've seen some good discussion here and other places on the net
that said i'm not sure the internet is a hobby for me...it's more of a calling now

Really, I don't think any hobby is stupid if it brings one contentment.

I'm a wooden spoon and basket collector.
I've had to force myself to stop with the baskets ... one can only have so many, and where to put them all?
As for the wooden spoons, they came in handy when it was time to beat the children.
I'm also very passionate about gardening. We have just under an acre of land and have been creating an English garden for the past 22 years.

the basket one is suspect hehe, i used to collect everything, all kinds of collectables like wade, beswick etc, made a fair profit at it as once i had a big enough collection i'd sell it. one of my faves was paperweights, still have 5 or 6 of those in the Philippines.

You brought back some very fond memories for me . I had an aunt (now passed on) who had a huge collection, as a little girl visiting I loved going through them ... wish I knew what happened to them.

i tried the postage stamp thing but gave up after a couple of weeks
i can understand making money off a hobby but what about pin collectors?

the problem with that is most hobbies cost money, if leno's hobby could feed a million, and ours could feed 1 or ten. just stopping leno's would be unfair.

the question arises;

should everyone only be allowed hobbies that cost nothing?

i know a person who collects buttons. sounds like a crap hobby but some of the ones she has are worth a few hundred pounds each
she told me she never spends more than a pound for one

it's called damasc,i have a knife like that,made in delhi where they still use the technique,instead by hand they fold the metal and pound it by machine
the knife has beautiful swirls in the blade

i used to collect oriental swords. mainly katana and wakasahi. had a few few tanto as well but mainly the swords.
the folding of the metal is only a small part in the traditional making of a katana. one of the most important is original smelting of the metal.
i also used to collect tsuba (the swords and guard) the most expensive tsuba i had was only worth a few hundred dollars,) some are worth tens of thousands.
