Yes this has been brought to my attention as well. To remedy this I am giving meaningful feedback to 10 poems in moderate and 10 in intensive before I post my next year. I would love to hear what you think of my translation

Great! Maximum effort should be a given. The posting guidelines in the important threads vary from workshop to workshop although the lines have gotten pretty blurred. It was basically no or limited line by line in Novice, as much as you could give in mild without scaring the poster shitless and as detailed as you can manage in Intensive, even if there wasn't a word unpicked on.

Nowadays, it seems to be just don't kill them in Novice and give as much as you can in the others, making sure you don't give a halfassed crit in Intensive.

In making a commitment to a specific amount, please make sure that doesn't mean rushing to achieve that goal. I know that you understand that but not everyone reading this may.

Intensive crit wasn’t always line by line. Tectak was the only one who stuck to that form in the middle years of the Pen. I don’t think line by line actually helps in workshopping. It often becomes an exercise in pedantry.


In the early years of the Pen, a distinction was made between the efforts that the critiquer was expected to put in, in each forum. That distinction has become blurred because such a practice could only be followed when there was enough of a deal flow and population of critics to justify such differentiation. You could still have Basic vs Intensive, but the Intensive vs Mild division doesn’t exist now, really.

And we have fewer people now, so take what you get. We had Lizzie, Knot, Richard, Tranquility Base, all join but none of them stayed for one reason or another, and TqB passed away. Now we have Matsun, but whether she becomes a permanent fixture remains to be seen.

The last poem I put in the workshop got loads of really good critiques and then I went and broke my arm the next day and just gave up on loads of stuff.

I felt guilty about not replying to anyones critiques and now I just think I'm out of practice. I've been lurking and reading poems but I just can't think of anything to say anymore about poetry.

I'd like to get back into it but I don't want to force it.

Music seems so much more forgiving than poetry as a means to create. I digress...

I’m not inclined to write it but I can still read it. Most things are more forgiving than poetry lol. Your presence is missed but shit happens. I almost wrote Nothing wrong with taking a break but decided against it.
