Gray cars are popular today
not for the statements they avoid
(red rouser wannabe,
blue jewel of dignity,
white for sturdy,
black for too cool)
but for the statement they so loudly
do not make:
You don’t get me
I rest here enclosed
in quiet quality
so like Dad’s deuce coupe
you don’t know what I’ve got.
Gray, glossy or
a little metalflake
never electric
hybrid at the very best–
I drive a gray car now
and when I trade it in
I’ll own another.
So your takeaway from gray must be,
you don’t get me now
and you never will.
