IIce Station Zebra
It's Recess in Writerville !!! -- Starting January 10th, it's IIce Station Zebra time !!!
IIce Station Zebra is a 24 day* expedition of enjoyment, a cruise of creativity, a trip of senselessly
psychedelic etymological enigmas complete with seductive sirens** beckoning you onto the beautiful
beaches of its fanciful fiords*** of wistful wordishness.
And did I mention word-dog races and deep-fried dictionaries?
And of course, in keeping with the tradition of IIce Station Zebra since its inception, we will have the
honor of crowning the International IIce Princess of 2018****.
Further explanation: IIce Station Zebra starts on Wombat Day (Jan 10) and ends on International No-Flea Day (Jan 31).
Every three days there will be a new writing challenge and the opportunity to valiantly attempt to meet it.
You and your comrades will be able to post these things in a very special thread for all to behold.
All are Welcome! No one (not even the lowly, loathsome, or wet-behind-the-ears) will be excluded.
Keep an eye peeled for further announcements and hints of what some of the bizarre challenges will be.
(And other spam attempting to whip up participation in this important creativity-inspiring event.)
IIcyfeetnotes:
* Actually it's 8, one every 3 days; but since 3x8=24 and 24 is just plain more impressive, we went with 24.
**Who, despite their reputation, are actually safe to listen to as long as you remain firmly fastened to your fantasies
by the thick threads of our wonderful world of webs.

Nominations* will close on December 31st.
The voting poll thread will be posted January 1st.

I sense the keen PTSDedness of someone who's past has been consumed by strategic repositioning.
I could tell you that I feel your pain, but that would be a lie. In fact, I've been trying to think
of something to tell you that wasn't and just realized my truth glass isn't even half empty.
But anyway, thanks for commiserating with me.
As sincere as ever,
Ray

There was no reason not to do them simultaneously, they are very different projects, Ray's choice.

I don't think they're the same at all. Ray's is a series of pretty complex writing challenges, with a few days given for each, I wouldn't want to see it watered down in any way.

I guess maybe I didn't pay attention but from what I remember he was looking to do a mini NaPM in the fall which is strikingly similar to what is going on here . . .

ha, that's what he originally proposed but instead he really dug in and came up with some very odd and interesting challenges, I think one was write with no E's (or something like that), citing research on what stuff like that does to your brain. They took a lot of thought and it's fine to wait until Ray, and Lizzie I think, prepare for it.

Ray's the boss, and, dare I say, the talent. I just work here.
Yeah, it's definitely not something that we just throw together slapdash at the last minute.
We're prepared for it, though, that's not the issue.

Oops, just getting back to this, was temporarily called away to have to participate in what "they"
(those voices in the other room) call "the real world" (something I think they make up just to harass me).
But about that move...
In my mind it was it an inescapable necessity if you believe, as I do, that 1. and 2. are true:
1. People only have a limited amount of time.
2. So holding two events at the same time detracts from both.
3. New Zealand National Poetry Month can't move from October.
4. So PWoF 2017 (sigh) needed to move.
------------------------------------------------
Now going back to ellajam and Lizzie:
Yes, PWoF was an amazing lot of work last year (as Lizzie attests).
Mostly because of all the stuff that got left on the cutting room floor.
(I have a list of more than 100 topics/techniques/puzzles about half
coming from Lizzie's research.) PWoF doesn't just have topics, it incorporates
different writing/creating/brain-stretching/just-plain-screwing-around techniques
into each "writing challenge". This requires researching the technique, spending way-too-long
reading really extraneous crap on the web (would you believe naked women and balloons
are a big-deal sexual fetish?), finding out who used it first, figuring out how to present it so it's
workable and is accessible to newbies and throwing most of them away because they don't work
given the structure of PWoF... Last year was a learning experience, this year things went/are-going
much smoother. But does it actually work?
Well... both you and I and Lizzie will be able to judge that in January.
But whatever... Get READY to crown an Ice Princess, participate in a sled race using etymologically
correct worddogs, and take lessons from William S. Burroughs.

Yes, OK, I'm officially crowning you "PWoF 2017 Ice Princess".
There IS one provision before I can award you the crown:
You must be present on January 10th to pass the crown on to the "Ice Station Zebra 2018 Ice Princess".
(And no, I'll give you the crown at the ceremony, no f'ing way I'm gonna trust you with that thing...
it's fragile and subject to corrosion (hey, we don't got much of a budget here).
Oh, forgot to say, the January writing event has been re-named, it's now called: "IIce Station Zebra ".

Thank you for the explanation, Ray, looking forward to it. At the rate the last few months have gone it will be here in the wink of an eye.

yay!
But remember: Failure to fulfill your destiny will result in various wraths... and not just from gods.
(Though, in practical terms, the ones from the gods are the ones I'd worry about.)
And your title has been retroactively changed to: "IIce Station Zebra 2017 IIce Princess*"
This just in:
And if word-dog races and the crowning of the International IIce Princess of 2018 weren't enough, IIce Station Zebra
has just added deep-fried dictionaries to its many multitudenous, multifariously magnificent, manifestations.
