#Elephants

I am watching a video
on social media
where a baby elephant
has slipped into a pool.

The two attending adults
move swiftly to action—
they’re bulky but nimble
with lightning wit.
The baby will survive this.

But there is another adult
obscured by a fence
near the top of the screen.

This one is frantic;
pacing the length of the barrier
snorting who knows what epithets
an elephant might snort.

It reminds me of the elephants
at the circus who charge.

The frustrations.
The weight of them.

I wonder why we feel we’re wise
to cage elephants—

and would comment

but it’s too cliché.

Hi Tiger the Lion

I like how you took a poem about elephants
and made it the lightest verse of the day. Smile
I hope your day is filled with big wide grins
and the ton of smiles you've just given me!
