My people can't read my poems - ego ray
#1
I just received an email from someone who said they couldn't read a poem of mine.
Said they got a screen that wanted them to sign in. So I just tried it when I was
logged off and yep.

I have an email list (small) of people and I send them links to my poems on
PigPen. Yes, I'm lazy, I just send them here instead of taking the time
to put the poems on my site... but there are some people who got referred,
or changed email addresses, or whatever and they just know to go to PigPen.
I don't want to loose those lost souls.

Did you know it does this? A change in the MyBB software or something?
Can you change it back?

Ray, if I remember properly we instituted the change that you'd have to login with an account to view poems to cut down on intense spam and bots.

Billy posted something about this a few months back.

Here's one thread. http://www.pigpenpoetry.com/thread-18747.html

There's also a thread somewhere about billy spending a whole day killing spider bots when the site was open.

It doesn't cost anything to join, let them sign up, no biggie, really.

But do me a favor? Think of some threads for the forum that's open to the public. I was trying to keep the last post recent so we don't look like a dead site but I get tired of talking to myself, Big Grin, though Leanne gives a hell-yeah sometimes. Throw a bone. *arfing smilie*

I was just looking for that too.

Spider and Bots -- Bandwidth and pain.
OK, I can understand that.
I've been away for a while and didn't know that had happened.

If there's one open forum, maybe there could be just one more?

I'd LOVE to have a public "PigPen Poetry" thread (or some name like that).
That way outsiders could see a bit of PigPen, we wouldn't seem
like an exclusive club, and we'd be more inviting to potential members.

Also members, such as me, would have a place to post poems they
wanted non-members to see. The way it works now, my poems
can't be googled. Bummer.

P.S. Requiring people to sign up doesn't work very well on the web.
When I go to a site that wants that I know it's in my browser
history so I could go back to it, then I go off a look for something
I can get to right away. Of course, I never do come back to it.

How To Use The Pigpen is the readable forum. Ray, someone else might quash the idea but I don't see why you couldn't start a thread there How Ray Posts or Poems You Can Read Without Logging On or A Roll In The Mud or something.

Cool! I'll ask billy first, but that sounds ok.
Not as good as a public poetry thread, but it would do.

It might be good to re-name "How to use the PigPen" to
"Click Here to find out more about PigPen". Then inside,
the first pinned thread would be "PigPen FAQ" and the
second one would be "How to use the PigPen".

Is there a way to get the locked poetry threads to disappear?
That way it would be obvious which one to click on.

I just went and looked while I was logged off. I pretended I was a potential
member trying to assess PigPen. I'm interested in poetry so I click the
poetry threads and can't get in. I would never think of clicking on "How to
use the PigPen". Very confusing, after the second poetry thread wouldn't
let me in, I'd go look elsewhere. I guess PigPen's not going to wither and
die or anything, there'll still be a few intrepid souls. And maybe that's
a good thing. One intrepid soul is worth ten introverted ones. (Unless
poets tend to be introverted.)

When not logged in the list of latest threads on the left are all accessable, in fact I found this other thread about this there: http://www.pigpenpoetry.com/thread-18763...#pid210525

That list is the list of threads in the How To forum, that's where your Ray Thread would be plainly visible.

I think it's a good idea to add something to the How To title and to the other forums header showing that all except How To are members only.

The change has been interesting. I think people who publish prefer a passworded site, even though that was not the reasoning. I think those who prefer free access miss it but in actuality I don't think there is less of an influx of members who become active and I can assure you there is no shortage of people joining thinking three oneliners will buy them the right to post their own work or finding non-workshops to get their My first post is my POEM threads deleted.

Welcome back, ray.

okay mister famous Confused

it's a fair request and has been accommodated. i've opened the miscellaneous forum to guests in order for poems posted there being able to be viewed.
since we made the no guest viewing rule we've had no major spam probs. for now it's a probationary opening and if it cause no problems we can keep it as is. on another point having people view members poetry is one of the best adverts the site can have so yes ray, good idea.

Slightly revising myself:

I think that "How To Use The Pig Pen" might be changed to "Click Here to Learn More About Pigpen"
(using bold lettering) and when clicked on, the text at the top of the forum would come up with the
Pigpen description that's used at the top right side of the main page.

The threads pinned at its top might be "Pigpen FAQS", "Pigpen Rules", and maybe a "What I Love
About Pigpen" with quotes from some of our more fawning members.

... and thanks for opening up miscellaneous. But considering how many zillion entrees Misc. has,
I wouldn't be surprised if it does have to be re-locked*. (But no matter, this has finally
persuaded me to get off my ass and copy my poems to my ancient website and use its URL instead.
(God (billy?) works in mysterious ways.)

*While I was laboring on my sister's art project, I did some work on their website. But in order
to not screw up the website, I got a domain name to do the development work under.  Unfortunately,
my all-too-cute domain name was identical to an existing porn site's, only it didn't have the XXX on
the end (I shouldn't have been surprised that so MANY people would forget to type "XXX"). My hosting
company severely throttled me and my response time reminded me of the olden days of dial-up phone
connections.  So yeah, I totally understand.

Achebe has a good method for getting a poem moved: Report the OP with the reason

"Can you move this to (forum of choice), please?

This allowed the first mod/admin on to take care of it instead of waiting for anyone in particular to read a PM.

Hah! I'll remember that.

I've taken down the couple of poems I didn't want Google-accessible. I should have just asked a Mod to move them.
