If anyone knows anything about animating stuff...

I'm seriously thinking of animating a couple of poems, in particular "She The Night" and "Breakout" as I think they'd lend themselves quite nicely to a visual form.

I'm pretty crap at drawing but do enjoy playing with nifty apps and new programs, so if anyone's got any ideas of something (cheap) to use I'd be very grateful.

i would highly recommend Adobe After Effects CS6. it is probably the best computer software ever created, with the exception of Logic Pro 9 [that is music software, though, so no need to worry about that].

anyway, so, get yourself Adobe After Effects and also Adobe Premier Pro CS6. these two programs basically do everything you want.

there are two problems: 1) they are both about £3000 each. so, if you were looking to buy them your probably going to be spending almost £6000 [i don't know what that is in australian]. and 2) you need a relatively good computer. premier is particularly draining on the system, for some reason. also, make sure you turn off the cache in After Effects, because it saves literally everything. i used it to make a film credit sequence, and each time i finished an element of something silly like 20 seconds, it was using 30 gigabytes of hard drive. i finished about 4 sections of 20 seconds each and it had eaten something like 200 gigabytes in total. luckily i have 2 terabytes, but had i not i think my computer would have died or exploded or something.
also, you really need to learn about codecs. or at least find a suitable compression for the export, because again, after effects exports pure lossless files as standard. this leads to epically large files, and you will even struggle playing them back.

anyway, all that is by the by, because you are probably thinking "£6000 [in australian]! are you a fucking idiot? i said cheap!". . . but the good news is, you can download them both for free from the pirate bay. woohoo!
of course, there is the ethical problem of 'oh, but piracy is theft. it's illegal. adobe will be upset' etc. but i tend to deal with this issue, on the few occasions it may have briefly entered the transom of my mind, by thinking to myself "i kinda, sorta, really don't care."

anyway. this is just a suggestion. and seriously, after effects is really enjoyable to use.

[and, just in case anyone from adobe is reading this, mine was only a suggestion, of course. i paid £6000 for em, all legit, like.]

I have this open source thing.  Most will run on M$ or Mac, but you may benefit from a simple Linux desktop install.

Here is a quick link to get started:

It's not exactly what you are asking for, but the price is right without PUBLISHED ethical issues.

oh, i forgot, you can buy a year subscription for about 18 quid for a month. it is the same program but it's called Adobe After Effects CC.

Wait, what do you mean by animating? making the lines of the text come alive by slowly morphing them into different things, or just associating images in them? and if you did mean the second one, however strange the images are, I'm sure that there may be some way to them live-action, instead -- which usually is less tedious. although maybe not --

18 quid a month is still pretty damned expensive! I'm a teacher, man, not a fucking millionaire artist Big Grin

I've had a quick look through the NYFA suggestions and I've downloaded a couple to see how they go.

I figure if someone as simplistic as Shane Koyczan can become a massive celebrity just because he animates shit, I can probably manage it myself. Not that I don't like Shane Koyczan, I do -- his audience is definitely not my audience but I'd say I can adapt stuff and throw it up on Youtube, since just listening on Soundcloud or reading on an actual page is clearly quite complicated for most people.

I've probably posted this before but this is one of my favourites of the fusion poetry/video genre:

ah, yes, i remember those days. and as i sit here, on my private jet, sipping champaign, and enjoying a complimentary blow job from playboy's playmate of the month, i often wonder about going back to teaching. . .

anyway, do you have any audio for the poem? because i was thinking about giving it a go with 'she the night'; i've always wanted to try some kinetic typography.

I haven't recorded those yet and you're always welcome to try. Your accent will sound much posher than mine Big Grin

If nobody else wants to do it, I would record it.

Anything that's here is fair game for any of you. Just promise me that if you become famous, you send me chocolate.

oh no, you have a beautiful voice, and especially for poetry. no one wants to hear my mumbling monotones. but yeah, i do want to give it a go, the typography, and test my patience with a bit of animation. be good for the soul. Smile

Happy to collaborate if you like. You have talents I definitely don't possess.

that'd be cool. i'm just going to do something with the first stanza, as a practice, to see if it's doable—i mean, doable for me, because patience is not my strong suit. i am using my own voice recording of the poem. i'll be learning this kinetic typography thing as i go, so it might take a while; but, if i actually manage to produce anything worthwhile, i'll let you know and you could do a proper recording of the piece and give me some ideas about how you would like it to look. bearing in mind the animation will have to be pretty simple as i left my stylus in poland.

and yeah, talents. . . if you mean not having any conscience about robbing adobe blind then, yep, what can i say, it's a gift. other than that, though, it's all just about time. and if there is one thing us "millionaire" artists have oodles of, it is spare time.
