I can still run
I know what's around each corner,
no need for hesitation,
but if I stay too long
I might never go back.
Granddad couldn't remember
how to go from hospital to house,
such vulnerability,
place names he lost
to scrabble, turned over blanks,
always starting a new game.
His Captains map
washed away in a blood clot.
So, I keep my hood up
never make eye contact,
long term memory is
more precious than short.
I have my map
it's crumpled,
stained with an old tea bag
for authenticity
and kept beneath the look
on Granddad's face,
lest I should forget
how to get back to
these streets
and who gave me my name.

Keith,
Nice one. Ha! turned over blanks. I know about blanks.
I used to be a counselor and could do 7 individuals sessions, five group sessions, and eight didactic sessions, then sit down on Friday and chart the whole lot. Now I have to write things down so I won't forget.
I won't go gently into that night,*
it's just I might forget to fight!

How long after picking up the brush, the first masterpiece?
The goal is not to obfuscate that which is clear, but make clear that which isn't.

Thank Dale, I can only imagine what it would be like to do a job like that but I do know you all deserve a medal

writing things down is ok as long as you can find the note

The fragility of the human mind is truly a tragic thing. The heart is willing but the mind cannot connect. It is well written and brings vivid pictures into my head. Thank you for sharing this.
