Talk about God?
Well now, let’s see,

the God that’s in you
is the Devil in me --
forgive me my
apostasy,
but a dot for an i
is the Cross to a t.
When the black and the white
have no in between,
no room for a lie
to be plainly seen,
for all is truth,
can’t tell you it’s not;
“Why was this left out?”
“What’s that you’ve got?
Give it here, I’ve a need to be warm this night
and your differing views gave me quite a fright,
so I’ll burn all your witchery,
don’t try your switchery
Socratic tactics on me.”

But God?
I don’t know --
He seems like he might
have it right
every now and again.
I just doubt that he’d see
me if I were to be
what you want:
just a speck,
just a mote,
just reciting by rote
all the words that you shove down my throat.

God is bigger than you
and He knows what He’s doing.
Just because I’m eschewing
all the values you cherish,
don’t believe I will perish
in the fires
that are licking
ever closer
while you’re picking
tiny details
from your shiny patent shoes.
What a shock, you might be the one to lose,
having thrown all you’ve got
in the wrong bloody lot
without thought,
all for naught --
well, I hope you like it hot.

You know what
God hates the most?
(As does his mate, the Holy Ghost)
Putting words in His mouth,
saying this, saying that
makes you look some kind of twat.
You don’t know that your prophet
was not indeed for profit
and idolatry was not
just cutting market shares,
so now his wares
are uncontested
and the laurels are well rested,
work is done,
God is One,
you have won the Holy Grail
but self-righteousness will fail
in the face of the Maker
and his holy undertaker
as he sees that your soul, while it still seems to be whole,
has been morphed into something less than sod,
and its filth stains the ground as Hosannas ring around
and you face the full fury of your God.
It could be worse

This is either (1) get the speck out of you eye before you fish in mine, (2) the juniper-smoked ham product, (3) something small, (4) a play on speck-spectacle-vision, or (5) a combo.

Talk about God?
the narrator has been asked to talk about God
Well now, let’s see,
evidence for speck-spectacle

the God that’s in you
is the Devil in me --
[b]evidence for the speck-in-your eye

forgive me my
apostasy,
but a dot for an i
is the Cross to a t.
the dot is a speck
I get the sense that the narrator is being snarky about being defective
When the black and the white
have no in between,
no room for a lie
to be plainly seen,
for all is truth,
can’t tell you it’s not;
“Why was this left out?”
“What’s that you’ve got?
Give it here, I’ve a need to be warm this night[,]
and your differing views gave me quite a fright,
so I’ll burn all your witchery,
don’t try your switchery
Socratic tactics on me.”
these read like lyrics, kinda . . . I can't resolve the call and return except to say it's someone with authority talking to an ingenue

But God?

every now and again.
I just doubt that he’d see
me if I were to be

This stanza is Lutheran Smile sola fide vs catechism.

def. a cut against the papal red shoes
What a shock, you might be the one to lose,
having thrown all you’ve got

This is a rap song! how delightful! I'm going to try it out . . .

This might not be what you were going for, but it's what I heard Smile

Ha! You have a much better voice for rap than I do, believe me -- if I was to read this aloud it would sound awfully posh and not right at all. But you know, that's pretty much how I wanted it to sound and I'm so delighted you took that route.

I've spent a bit of time on poetry sites where the main body of members is drawn from preachy ponces who have no tolerance for anyone else -- I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools, but I never felt so preached at as by these pompous arseholes, so this is what happened Smile

Nice job. I like the words naught for its proximity to nothingness and I'm also partial to the hosannas though I have really only encountered that word in Milton. Puns are always fun too.

Yep, that's the speck. And no, it's not because (as someone rather unkindly suggested) I'm wearing glasses.

i though of Seuss. the speck being some socially serious absurdity that some fight, some endure, some apologies for and others outright love. replace the word god with Santa Claus and the ones that love Santa are the most adorably stupid (children)... all the rest can go fuck themselves.
