In Recognition Of NPM, How About A Poetry Contest?
#1
Not for me. I suck. But as an appreciator of the fine art of poetry, I would be willing to be an organizer and patron of it, as in establishing the framework for it, and offering a sum of, say, $250.00 dollars for the winning poem. Hey, money and competition breeds success, methinks.

What do I get out of it? Reading great poems.

What I'm thinking so far is this:

--Poems must be submitted in a particular thread by April 30th
--One poem per person
--It must be your poem (honor system)
--It must be a new poem (honor system)
--Members of the site will be the judges the week following April 30th (who? how many? I don't know)
--There will be a discussion thread where members can argue their reasons why a certain poem should be the winning poem (this would be ongoing, and challenge our critiquing/appreciating skills)
--Yes, if I stake it my word is good. Money sent the day after to the winner/winning poem

Any interest? If yes, I'll MC it and be the patron of it.

If not...oh well. Big Grin

I know. I saw it. I honestly didn't think I was capable of coming up with a poem-a-day. I don't got your skills, can't rattle off fillers like you can.

PS> Your "One Mississippi..." poem was awesome. It actually choked me up a bit. Those transitory moments that you wish were the bricks and mortar of some kind of poetic heaven. Or something like that...

Most of us here can't write to the level of some of us, it's the effort that's fun. I'm pretty sure by the end of the month people will be skipping the worthless stuff I'll be posting, but if I come up with just one worth working on I figure I'm ahead of the game. There's certainly nothing to lose.

it's all about the writing. while the napm get some feedback it doesn't get in depth stuff, it's just there to exercise the juices.

while i'm sure someone could use $250 we don't do the prize thing, 97% have basically got no chance of winning it. what i would suggest is this. if you se a poem and you'd like to use it as a spoken word poem, pm the poet and ask, most would let you and they would i'm sure feel flattered.

it's not you, it's just a site principle. here we're all winners. (it is great to see you taking part in the site though, and yes, you can write a poem, so just take part as best you can :J:

That's fine. No big deal. Delete or lock the thread. No harm no foul. I could care less. I was just trying to make something fun and exciting happen, and willing to put the time and money into it. That's all. Wink

Actually I'll happily take responsibility for the "no contest" vibe since I'm probably the most vocal opponent and I always kill it off when the mods suggest it. It's partly because I'm evil and no fun at all, but largely because winners of contests are chosen so arbitrarily. There might be 42 poems of equal skill, showcasing equal facility with form, function and creativity, but one will stand out to the judge(s) purely based on preference. A judge who prefers free verse will rarely choose a sonnet; a formalist judge will be less likely to accept a beat-style poem. And a judge with less experience in reading and writing poetry will not always recognise skill, but will go with gut feeling.

However, may I add my thanks for the offer. There is nothing more heartwarming than people showing such acceptance of the site that they're willing to put something so substantial back, and we greatly appreciate it. It's just that here, the only currency we really think of as important is time.

Of course, all valid points in regards to the judging of such things. I was definitely aware of them. But I've found you can't get around such biases, even in the minds of the judges of our national poetry awards. I was just thinking in terms of aggregate incentive and reward amongst any participants, rather than merely the one-winner-thing.

But that's neither here nor there, and I'm certainly not in the least put-off by the lack of interest in such an idea. Just blame it all on a sudden quantum fluctuation in my grey matter. Big Grin

As for the money thing, I just added that in after reading Milo's post in which he said that he'd sell all his poetry for a $100.00 dollar gift certificate at Amazon. Hysterical The money thing came up in that thread in regards to poetry, and I thought to myself "okay, well here it is" (as meager as the winning sum might be.) Dodgy

Anyway...all in fun.
