I’d like to be John Ashbery
I’d like to sit beneath his willow tree
and write some words,
just as he “do”,
that might, if true, spring up
and break some judges' hearts.
And if I did, I’d write again
like him.
And afterwards,
I’d be in such a high regard
and thought of as accomplished, wise, and smart,
I’d prise from editors as easily
as taking candy from a baby’s hand
a new award;
and then, once more, my shining
poesied guise
would also win for me
a Pulitzer or two.
Oh how I wish that I could stand
and say
while giving out my poet’s card.
I am, you see,
the prized John Ashbery.
