Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Have all the leaves lost their luster
as the moon her courage muster.
Like the peacock in prideful boast,
leaves fade and leave their oaken host.
Withered leaves collect at my feet
as each new dawn I wake to greet.
When I was young, the world was new.
Now my gait slows as I outgrew.
The foliage of my past days
now are lost in a dreamy haze.
Each silhouette of leaf does fade
around scenes that are now long staid.
The tree now bare with leaves cast out
as I bear years now in a drought.
Each ridge and line now parched of life
now in memory as a dull knife.
The wind bristles at the leaf now
as it does make its final bow.
How bright as stars in candlelight
in the moment, vibrant and bright.
As the leaf rocks to sleep caressed
by icy winds of time, I test
each vein that pumps a sense of aim
as I attempt some moment to name.
On knees that ache, I rest on bench
to watch the echoes of leaves wrench
hopes and dreams sought that line my cage
rusted in the dew of my age.
Like clothes outgrown, leaflets crumpled
line my mind in the moments filled.
As the leaf sails great puddle seen,
go now visions now brown, then green.
The Autumn winds envelope my
overcoat as the leaves now die.
Leaves that traipse the busy city street
float to oblivion to meet
the cobwebs of my mind now gaunt
in some familiar old haunt.
Shall I read between the margin
of maple long since forgotten
of some sentimental journey,
a sweet lullaby that now flee.
Most flat and thin as hair strand
that flutter between sky and land
are leaves that curdle as squeezed hand.
Like some translucent gown to wear
are nature's finery so shear.
Some serrated shape with scars seen
that melt from view when lifeless green
is left for dust in setting sun.
