yah, I haven't even started mine yet. As soon as I get it done I will post it, but I expect to see a lot of different examples. In the past I have seen such examples as sleep is a fish . . . and Tarantula Insomnia. Play around, part of the fun is seeing all of the different interpretations.

Sleep is a cuddly bear;
warm in hibernation
curled under cover of mum's bedspread.
Clawless in happy thoughts of floating
salmon aimed upstream on a spring day.
It's a Winnie "thinking of honey"
the Poo moment,
or Rupert exploring in his flying car
chasing villains and a Pekingese dog.
Sleep is fun.

When all stretched out
my tummy swells,
like frog in drought.
Like me, he smells,
but not of sleep.
He dreamt of wells
so wet, so deep;
and then he slipped,
with out a peep,
down to his crypt:
too hot, bone dry.
But I am stripped,
with sweaty thigh,
and can exhale.

And there you lie, fragrant with ambition,
laden with tomorrow's chance
but trapped by soil and circumstance
until the winds spread pollen across
your lids and yellow your gentling breaths.
With questing feet it comes
to dart its artful tongue into darkened chambers,
seeking nourishment or illusion
to lift its wings and carry that which may be
to those you'll never know
unless you uproot and learn
how to fall.

Just trying to distract from my own failings. I forgot my pencil, sir, honest. Or maybe billy stole it. Yeah, that's it.

The pelican flies south
and the shoreline of now
crystallizes into sandy landscapes.
We pass over a dandy lion
trapped in sand, it roars.
The pelican rises high in it's updraught
out of reach from the coastline's glare,
it espies glass mountains of buttercups
and takes me there: i like butter.
The big mouthed bird fucks off
"Are you awake you lazy bastard?"
I smell bacon and eggs.

The itch is first, face and hands
then neck and back as hair, thick
and ropy, bursts forth like lunar
moss. Then the fever, pregnant heavy,
red as crushed rose paste, hazes
thoughts of rent and taxes, presses,
stems the panic of misshapen bones
and mangled shaggy saber tipped paws.
Finally, the lupine clear awareness
of the thrombic tick, a staccato calling
click, the rhythmic pull
of a distant carotid pulse.

Many faces
Sleep's sometimes
so swift and light,
wings of a humming bird.
The wakeful mind weaves
a nest of wispy dreams.
Sleep could be a cozy cat,
purring so softly,
spreading the doze;
until you close your eyes
and give in to the soothing caress.
Sleep comes seldom,
slithering as a python,
twining itself around
in a bone-crushing grip
a long-needed kip
undeniable at last.
I want to participate in this NaPM event.
I know this one is a poor try, will do my best in the coming ones.
Cheers

April 1st
Sometimes, like an antelope,
preyed upon by my daily fears,
I am parched of sleep and gulp in big draughts.
An incoming flood.
Washing over my eyes and drowning “I”
A single wave within a tide,
that despite my nerves and anxious thoughts,
cools, and congeals
the echoing, racing hoof beats.
It drags me down into the murky depths,
to be swallowed by gaping, gripping jaws
that twist and tumble me from my riverside bed.
Only to be spat out, further down the river.
No idea if this is what is on the table for everyone else but i'm just looking forward to slinging some words from the crate to the page without any real editing as such. Thanks for the space to do this and the creative bump start.
AJ.

Night Terrors
Eyes are empty black beads.
Whiskers tremble for darkness
is a mouth, and life is the sound
of snapped twigs, and crushed leafs
Fear scurries on soft pads.
Without moonlight,
shadows are invisible,
and the breeze belies
the descent of wings--
a question without answer.
Two eyes circle above.
The secret of poetry is cruelty.--Jon Anderson

Yes the turnout is already better than I anticipated. I am, of course waiting the full 24 hours to post the new topic (giving me a couple hours more to start thinking of 1 of course) so any last minute riders that wanted to be here for the whole trip still have time.

Cheers Actually, there is a lot to like about this, especially the last stanza. Not saying you had to take the whole ark and leave no poor beasties for the rest of the poets . . .
