There’s a woman I used to know,
She’d come to my house every Thursday night
Between 11pm and 1am.
A faint, timid knock on my door,
And she’d come in my room and take off her long,
Black coat, and crawl, half naked, in bed beside me.
She always warned me though, if I tried to touch her
She’d get up and go home.
At first I thought this was a challenge,
And of course I touched her…
And she pulled away, put her coat back on,
And went to the door.
I said, “What is this… some kind of gag?”
But after a cold look, only women give,
She sure enough went home.
The next Thursday, the knock came again,
And the same cruel comedy played out.
This went on for almost a year.
Some nights I was more forceful,
I’d pin her to the bed and demand answers;
But I never made her:
And she would only ask me to please let her go.
A couple times she cried.
So finally, one night, she walked in
As calmly and boldly as usual,
Stripped down, crawled over me, and laid down
Between me and the wall—
And I simply didn’t try to touch her.
We lay in silence for an hour or so,
And she went to sleep.
Somewhere outside, a cat moaned and whined;
The girl beside me breathed heavily,
Making high pitched, little squealing sounds
Instead of snoring.
I closed my eyes and imagined I was alone
Deep in the wilds of a jungle:
I was too frustrated to sleep.
In the morning, I lay watching her face
With the tremulous warmth that shone through the blinds;
A few strands of hair fell over her eye
And I gently pushed them back…
And she woke up, and smiled at me with her eyes closed,
Yawned, and said, “I love you.”
She said she had to be at work by ten, and needed to go home
And have a shower.
I asked her if she’d be back, and she said, “Of course.”
But the next Thursday she didn’t come.
