Here's one I've liked (it's not one to Live by it's by John D MacDonald the first line in his book Darker than Amber):

Mine's a typically long and pretentious one, from my favourite writer and novel. I suppose it's more of a passage than a quote, but nonetheless:

Yeah, I've heard different versions of it. One is from Socrates: The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing. There's another but I forgot who said it and how it goes.
