do you need one?
i never though i did, thought i could write anywhere but now i know i was being all piss and windy.
i've been trying to do a rhyme version of leanne's sestina lesson and all i have in my ear is fuckin loud music from the posh effin spice and her fellow spice bitches.it's so loud i keep writing down what i' hear. really really want, i'll tell you what i fuckin want
so can you write anywhere? what's best conducive to you ripping out a masterpiece?

I'm very temperamental when noise is concerned, but not the setting itself. If I'm trying to write the only noise I can stand is classical or instrumental music- hearing lyrics screws up my concentration. But as far as where I write it doesn't matter. I write from my desk, in my Lazy Boy, from a forklift at work and anywhere else it strikes me.

i used to write anywhere then the pc came along. now i can only do so on the pc.
i like classical though sometimes when a cannon roars unexpectedly i crap my pants and squiggle a line across the screen
i did try the carrying pad and pencil thing but always forgot to put it in my pocket.
once i took both with me when i flew to the uk and left them at the airport...on purpose. i hated them

I never wrote with a pen and paper till I read Fry's book. He suggested that it might help with word choices and what-not. Honestly I don't know if it helps or not. Before that I used to just type poems into my phone.

I can write with a pen at a pinch, but I like pencil best of all -- not because I can rub it out, because I still just cross stuff out in case I might want to remind myself what I originally thought, but mostly just because I like the feel of pencil on paper and it's better for the doodling that I inevitably do when I can't think of a word.

I do write straight into Word a lot these days, but yes, it's got to be quiet. Noise is great in the inspiration stage, but death to the execution part

And to edit, I have to have coffee and complete silence, there's no substitute.

i don't mind but it does cause the brain wires to short circuit at regular intervals.

I generally will write something in my head, and then go write it down. If it is a difficult verse form, I think it follows the same rules as meditation. I seriously doubt I could do anything with the spice girls playing, except look for an ax with which to smash the fucking stereo. For some reason it reminds me of the scene where Bottom is strenuously spouting lines and he keeps getting...interrupted!

I do think there is something very different between just writing, and trying to put something into a rigid verse form. The second type requires much more of ones conscious mental faculties. Especially if one is not use to it. Leanne could probably write a sonnet in a windstorm.

I love Louis L'Amour beyond all reason, just thought I'd throw that in there. Now there was a man who could turn any piece of knowledge that he came across into one hell of a yarn.

As for writing sonnets in windstorms, I've not tried it. Most of them are composed in the shower.

Write drunk. Edit sober. Read it sober, and get drunk enough to write something better.

I think atmosphere is very important to writing. But I think it's best to have a small notebook to jot down enough to remember, and then write when you're anywhere else. I'm so affected by environments that I can't write at all, or I can't make the words shut up so it's like I'm drunk and every thought that pops into my head feels like gold. You can write anywhere, but it's a big thing trying to wait till you've digested experiences properly enough to write sensibly about them. I get drunk on music, setting, so many things.

This is an important topic.

For some reason I can't write anything good on the computer just with a black ink pen and paper. I also can't think when its quiet. I get my best inspirations with music, but I can't write in front of other people it distracts me. I'm picky when it comes to writing, but I do believe in "write drunk, edit sober" because I write what ever comes to mind then in a few days I come back to it and rework it.
