I realized today
sad to say
my best friends
are characters in fiction:
Frodo Baggins on his pony,
the Steppenwolf looking in his mirror,
Leopold Bloom in his bath,
and Seymour Glass
with a gun to his head
about to transcend
to his next appearance.

And I must not forget,
Alfred E. Neumann
and with him I repeat
“What, me worry?”

You could do worse.  Besides, aren't we all a bit fictional trying to rewrite ourselves each day just a little?

Tranquility Base - When you live long enough, it may be also found strange how some best friends started out as straight up people and later seemed to devolve by Life’s quirks into the very same characters you mentioned. Feels good to have escaped! Thanks TB for the memories. Enjoyed. Namyh

It already has happened to some extent, although I guess I still know them, at long distance, so that they haven't become entirely fictional memories.
