you should be able to open these types of files with windows

oops word

right click any open office doc icon not the open office program icon
click the line of text that says open with
tick the box that says always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

if word isn't listed

click the browse button
when you find the word program click on it
press the ok button.

Thanks Billy! Yes I can reopen them with MS office word. I just don't understand why they defaulted to open word when they were written in MS office Word. Huh

because somewhere in the code of openoffice is an instruction that tells the registry to open all files of that type with openoffice. a small price to pay for a freebie of such calibre considering you can change it en masse if you wish.
real player, wmp, and a host of other progs do the same.

Actually the code is in windows, it is under "file associations". When you install open office it changes the default for certain files (doc, docx, etc) to openoffice, it does nothing to the files themselves and it is easy enough to switch back.

and yes it extremely easy to change back, you don't even have to open file associations. though that's as easy a way to do it as any other :J:

Interestingly, it associated my doc's with open office (MS Office 2006 and older), but left my docx's alone (MS Office 2009 and newer). As you say, I can open them with either Open or Microsoft Office.

Can I post columns in a poem with open office?

Just asking before I hunt down the program.

Not as far as I know, Todd. Unless of course billy and co. have added that ability-- it is not a standard MyBB feature.
