There's a multitude of tangential meanings for one to entertain, some more justified than others. That's what makes this piece great: we're not struggling to find meaning, just sifting through tantalizing possibilities. 

One opportunity that I did see: I think that "old" is implied because it's the father's lawnmower. You could put that syllable to other use, if you wanted.

Thanks for that OMG. If "old" is implied, you're right, I may be able to slip in a more textured modifier. The thing about those old lawnmowers is they worked forever. The new ones are like kitchen appliances and only last a few years. So the lawnmower is as much a perennial miracle as spring itself.

Indeed. I see what you mean, that it's particularly important to make sure that the reader appreciates the reliability of an older machine. I assumed that people would infer this, but it's probably better not to leave that up to chance, in this case.
