Corruption and Voter Suppression
#1
One of the oft disputed requirements for voting in the US is a valid photo ID. For those people who wish to vote but don't have one (often students, the poor and the elderly), the government's concession is to have government agencies give out free voter ID cards upon request. But in Wisconsin, there's a catch: they will do their damndest not to let you know about, and not let you know it's free.

In a memo sent out by the executive secretary for the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation, he urged DMV employees not to offer the ID unless explicitly asked: "While you should certainly help customers who come in asking for a free ID to check the appropriate box, you should refrain from offering the free version to customers who do not ask for it"
Meanwhile, a Wisconsin state employee was fired from his post at the Department of Safety and Professional Services for sending out his own memo to coworkers, reminding them that the photo ID's are available without charge. In the email, he warned that workers at the DMV/DOT (where the ID's are available) are under orders from higher-ups not to inform applicants that the ID's are, in fact, available free. So if you apply for one without explicitly stating that you want a free ID, they will charge you for it!!!-- even though legislature put funds away to cover the ID costs, so as not to make citizens have to pay to vote.

The whistleblower's supervisor said his email was "inappropriate" and would anger higher-ups, and fired him on those grounds.

PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?
