where will science take us.

we've seen a few threads like this but i was amazed at this article i found after seeing it on the news;

Quote:Going for a yearly flu shot may become a thing of the past. British and Swiss scientists recently discovered a flu “super antibody” that can fight several strains of the flu virus and could soon lead to one universal shot, Reuters reports.

After being tested on mice and ferrets, the F16 antibody was found to combat all 16 subtypes of the influenza A virus, which are responsible for causing disease in humans and animals. source:

Viruses are pretty crafty little fellas -- no sooner will they find a "super-antibody" than the virus will develop an even more super body.

At the end of the day we can develop medicines to our hearts' content, we're still going to die of something.
It could be worse

yeah but if they can sort out a perfect vaccine it won't be of the flu.
if they ever dicover an antibody that cures all sickness; (all the viral and invasive illnesses ) apart from man made accidental deaths etc, will they use it?

They will use it.

And it won't work.

For the same reason that we have "superbugs" today. Something will go wrong somewhere along the line--some people won't be completely cured (they won't get enough of the vaccine for their body weight, or they'll be injected with less than fully effective vaccines "just" past their use by dates, or the person giving them the vaccine will have a hangover and fuck it up somehow, or any no. of other things). Some viruses will then survive and mutate into a resistant form.

thats usually the case but it should work for a while and yeah the next superbug is always round the next corner. what we actually need are nanobots that work on the atomic or subatomic level. (ithink) but if we ever get them they'll be weoponised i'm asure.

We will use the super-antibody... one shot for everyone is convenient and will theoretically save many lives. But that's with the understanding that it's effectiveness will only be for a limited while, if that... we need to continuously come up with more innovations in medicine, and I suppose that is one path.

Nanos? That could be interesting... if they acted like white-blood cells then they can serve as a substitute for people whose immune systems are shot.
PS. If you can, try your hand at giving some of the others a bit of feedback. If you already have, thanks, can you do some more?

what things could be done with the use on nano?

i think they would be great for obesity if they could remove fat cells.

A treadmill's good too Smile

Nanos have lots of potential. they might even be able to remove contaminants from people's lungs, which is too delicate a job for typical surgery.
