Sleeping pills (short story)
#1
Theres a storm outside, illuminating her still sillouette in cold flashes. The lightning riding down each column of her spine, tensing her muscles into an alert sit. Her covers curled up against her waist, acheing to finish their meal, but every minute sound; like the beating of a moth's wings, or the static from her son's television downstairs, keeps her awake. When lacking noise her mind simply creates it's own, as a faint ringing plays in her ears, like the sound of changing between radio stations. Tonight would be different though, as she contemplates the sleeping pills on the night table. A crackling flash breaks her gaze from the bottle into the darkness in front of her.

"The pills would pull her under
a deep deep slumber
where neither lightning nor thunder
could render
her deep deep surrender."

She gathers her courage and reaches out blindly for the bottle, unscrews the lid, and swallows a pill whole, ignoring the glass of water that sat beside it. Now, the moment she dreaded; the wait before unconsciousness, like the few seconds after euthanasia, where the dog lies under the hands of strange men, before breaking through the instantaneous barrier of death. Falling down deep, deep, deep, into it's gaping void. Laying down with blankets tightly wrapped around her neck and shoulders, she listened to the ticking off the stopwatch in her head, staring into bleek opaqueness, before descending into the even deeper opaqueness, of sleep.

Should I have sent this in poetry discussion? It's not really a poem, just wanted to share it.

You could take this down if you like, I don't mind.

technically it is a discussion now. We're discussing about whether it is or not.

when it said general, I thought it meant generally anything.

I personally don't know anything about prose. This is a poetry site, I assumed the sewer was good for short stories, prose is like a crossways. We talk about prose lots but rarely see it posted. Here's the poll, should be have a prose forum?

Poetry, imo, is important to learn before doing prose.
It would be the next step for serious writers to take.

we do occasionally do some prose poetry, and i do think that poetry as a category ought to be plastic enough to include, say, some of the best Alice Munro stories. for which we have Misc.

It would make an excellent 'haibun' and haibuns are definitely poetry.
It has the elements that make up a haibun, prose interspersed with haiku or haiku like poems.
So call it a haibun and stick it in miscellaneous.

The art of good haibun is to use the haiku breaks to take you somewhere unexpected.

I like what you've done with this.

and now for shameless plug of my ancient haibun  http://www.pigpenpoetry.com/thread-17194.html

also should we have a prose forum - NO

The Taxman Always Rings From His Own Life (pigpenpoetry.com)

I've written around 300 short stories. I've written thousands of poems and essays.

People tell me that I never do anything.

I don't. Unless you count writing.

You can deny me. And what I'm saying.

But I have written in my life.
