Howdy!

Hello everyone!
My first entree on here i guess.

Anyway, i've been noticing that a lot (and when i say a lot, i mean all) of my material is rather, well, depressing.

Was wondering if this is a prominent issue with others and how i could maybe try and find inspiration from other things or what subjects would be less depressing to write about and how i would start writing less sad stuff.

Cheers xx

hi Yiz.

i find that most of my stuff is either funny or tries to be. i think we all do depressing stuff now and again but in general i'm a happy writing poetaster.

when you say depressing, do you mean depressing about self? if so, i'd suggest writing about anything but self. i find i lie a lot in when i write, though i do have a smidgen of truth in my stuff. write about anything; write about depressing stuff and make it funny.
write about an apple, a pig, we have a few here Big Grin [joking]. travel has lots of scope. write a few short happy poems; just 4 or 5 liners. unless it's a really great poem, stay away from emo and cutting stuff. nature can be a good topic but in general you can write light or happy about everything, even death.

anyway, welcome to the site. Thumbsup

Interesting topic. Depressing or dark material is not really an issue, at least not to me. I've rarely seen people hating on Poe for being dark. I know people who only ever listen to happy and upbeat music and turn away from any song that implies some kind of death, while most of what I listen to makes some call to death. There's not much to gain by reading sunshine and rainbow poems every day, but that doesn't mean everything must be dark and dreary.
As of late, I've been writing a lot about death, not because I've been surrounded by it or impacted by it, but because I've been wondering what it's like. Dying. Being dead. All that.
It's pretty easy to take inspiration from expiration.
In the end, poets really just make puns.

Do you want to find inspiration by other, less sad things? Search out that inspiration. I keep a folder on my computer of different items that could potentially inspire me.
A document full of ramblings.
A picture I took of a sailboat.
Poems I've read, enjoyed, and analyzed.

Any of these could easily be turned into a dark poem, but that would be a conscious decision - the material is not dark on its own. Consider if your inspirations are dark themselves or if its just a decision you make as you write. Then attack the issue. Either search out other inspirations or change how you execute the writing.
If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room.

Depressing things are beautiful
You needn't search for an alternative source of inspiration
Suck it up t'ill it's dry

Aside that, try reading all kinds of poetry. There is art in the subtleties, and you will come to appreciate language as a whole. Poetry is more than the words, and all about them at the same time.

Ostensibly you’re writing because you have something you want to say; generally it’s a reflection of your moods, your emotions, what is going on in your life, a decision you are contemplating...

So tell me about it   Just write - explain it - in your natural voice.  Don’t make it dramatic, don’t make it poetic, just make me understand it.  Poetry is a a form of communication, so communication is the most important aspect. If it’s a dark or depressing thought then it is what is.  Good chance I’ve felt that way too, and it will strike a chord. I’m the end, an author has to expose something of themselves in writing, or it’s not going to connect. It’s scary at first, because we fear rejection.

If a lot of what you currently have to say feels depressing, then it might be change is needed in your life.  No psychologist here, just an old man who’s been through a lot, had to make changes to my own life, all which reflected in my writing.

Post something here. Communicate a thought to us. We are on your side and want you to succeed. But we can’t discuss your writing without seeing it.
