who has left feedback? was it just a pat on the back ball-stroker or was it fairly in depth.

I've been leaving feedback. Don't know if it's any good.

I've been giving it my best shot. At first I found it extremely hard; probably because it felt unnatural. But it is getting a lot easier, which must mean I'm becoming more ruthless. Although saying that I've just noticed that I only joined 5 days ago, but it feels more like 5 months..... but in a good way.

We really need a thumbs-up emoticon... but thank you! It's never easy to begin with but just like writing (and possibly even moreso), close and careful reading is a craft worth learning. Writers need readers, and good writers need good readers.

It is. Detailed or not, every comment you make is insightful and highlights something about the poem that does/doesn't work. That's exactly what we need.

My natural bent is to back-pat, but no ball-stroking. However, I am too terrified of She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed, andd so, if I do comment, I struggle to rake up something nasty to say, in a positive way.

A propos of nothing, I see that Celtic have been turned over by Motherwell. Smile

So what you're saying is that you don't do anything for fear of moderate chastisement that will most likely never be applied to you... no wonder you people aren't an Empire anymore :p

First - I would like to hear 1 valid reason there is NO POLL ATTACHED TO THIS THREAD!!! WTF Billy??!! You know I love Polls!!! Second, if I ever get a chance to stroke balls, I usually go that route. Third, wait a second, with all the ball stroking I got distracted, what were we talking about again?

yeah, i can add a poll.

I do the best i can (given the time i have to post) in serious i'll usually do a line by, though seldom will i comment on every line. I'm not the greatest at giving feedback, I just say what i think as to how the poem affects me.

In mild i often go overboard and give more feedback than i should; mia culpa.
in novice, i think i give decent feedback, often i'll give an example of things i mean, while i may rearrange a few lines. i try not to re write the poem. (i used to do the rewrite thing :blush) mia culpa.

in fun i try and pick up on something i can say something funny or smart-arsed about.

in haiku i also tend to go over board, three lines and i'm replying with essays at times Smile (no mia culpa on this one Wink )

i think we have lots of excellent members who give relevant feedback, and a few who need to try and improve.

i see nothing wrong in what you leave rowens, if every member left feedback the same as you, we'd be the premier feedback forum on the net.
i think workshops not only need in-depth feedback, they also need a variety of styles in the way the feedback's given.

Hi ambrosial.

like leanne said, it can be hard giving feedback, specially on a new site. well done,

Is that new, or have I been blind up to now?

I haven't been leaving feedback lately cause I've lacked the mental energy to think hard about stuff. But when I've done so in the past, I tried to leave detailed critique.

Hopefully things will change soon.

Mikey, we love you and your feedback is awesome. Everyone's entitled to down time now and then. I'm taking a bit myself just now, to recharge (so if Abu was paying attention he'd have realised that he has pretty much carte blanche right now Wink)

I'd never noticed the thumbs-up guy but maybe I just wasn't paying attention. So Thumbsup

"I don't leveave feedback, i'm too busy masturbating over my own" -- that would explain the typo...

you give decent feedback on a regular basis, how can anyone complain about that. if someone gives regular feedback, it's okay if they post a few poems etc without doing the feedback thing. we all need a break now and again Smile

the thumbs up thing has been there for years now Wink

Sometimes I'm very mean. Most of the time I am honest and brief, but if I'm giving feedback in mild or serious I tend to be as thorough as I am capable.
I'm not a very wordy person, as some of you may have already noticed.
I'll be there in a minute.

I 'm a natural back patter and normally lean towards the warm and fluffy, but I can have the odd moment of being sharper.
I find crit in the novice section the hardest, because i don't want to damage anyone who is just starting out...I end up writing too much and then adding in a warm and fluffy conditioner to make it all better. Undecided
Perversly I find doing the deeper crit is easier esp in the serious section as i don't have to hold back on a flow of thought. (Assuming I can work out what the hell the poem is about because half the time I'm not up on the subject / idea and I struggle to connect).
I do admire those with the ability to read and crit even on subjects they know nothing about - I find it very hard.
Like Mikey I have been having a bit of a breather. I was in a real rut (in life and in my writing) and was close to running off again to hide, but I'm glad i didn't -this place is one of the few good things going on in my life at the mo.

I've also been taking a feedback break... between life and NaPM I haven't had the energy or the time to read much here, let alone critique.
when I do crit through, I try to stay where I feel my level is at... meaning no line-by-lines or anything like that. I make a point not to rewrite, I find that a bit insulting... "look at how much better I can write your poem than you can" (no offence meant to those who do... it just rubs me the wrong way).
I generally can only post crit on poems I like... I'm sure that's a flaw of mine. does anyone else get that? there's quite a bit of poetry that I either find dull or over my head, so why spend time critiquing it when I won't enjoy even the finished product? lol that's my rationalization anyway.
sorry for rambling. good thread billy.

I think re-writing depends on the comfort level of the group. There is a game we used to play called "poetry telephone". It is fun. It also helps get past your own ego which is, I feel, where most writers get caught up. Writing is writing. Writers write. Conventions and egos seem to only get in the way.

imo, rewriting depends on the person whose poem you're rewriting. if they're cool with it, go for it. to me it just feels like a frustrated "HERE! this is how you should do it!" which isn't what poetry is about anyway. but I've been lucky, don't think anyone has ever rewritten anything of mine, so I'm not complaining or anything, just observing. =]
